I must be the most inadequate historically horse obsessed gal in the world. Tonight, for the first time, I’m watching National Velvet. Isn’t this kinda part of the initiation? What part did I miss. I’ve seen Black Beauty more times than I care to admit (and equally as many times bawled my eyes out), but this one I just never got around to.
Well, I’m in love; I don’t know how I lived without this film. It’s so quaint but full of dreams and hope and holy crap, Liz Taylor was a gorgeous child.
AND, who forgot to tell me Angela Landsbury is in it??
Anywhoo, a bit late…but this one gets a big thumbs up from me.

I had a good giggle this morning when I read this article on Boing Boing on how Hollywood depicts computer stuff. One of my favorites:
4. Code is not three dimensional
Remember in “hackers” when the gibson is depicted as a three dimensional city that the hackers must navigate through? Bullshit! We may use a dash of color in our shell to make things a bit clearer, but last I checked my terminal app doesn’t require OpenGL. I’m working here, bitches - I’m not playing quake.
With a husband who has sat next to me for a countless number of movies and TV shows where he shakes his head and sighs, muttering, “are you kidding me?”, I know exactly what this writer is getting at. Admittedly, while the above example did seem a teensy bit extreme the first time I saw it, I just shrugged and moved on with my life. But over the years I’ve learned a little more (not much, but enough) and find myself a bit more sensitive to the glorification of computers in movies like The Net and Swordfish (p.s. I am shocked that the word “swordfish” pulls up that gawd awful movie as the first result in Google…eeeks.)

So, yesterday was a big day in the worlds of these two companies. Their strategic alliance, which soured a few years ago has done a complete turnaround - Pixar is now a part of the Disney (you can read more about this rollercoaster history here) More than what the stocks do, more than what the box office does, I will be interested to see what happens within the next five to ten years now that there is no new bar to try and exceed; the bar has been reigned in by the previous holder of the standard.
It’s encouraging that Lasseter will still be in charge, at least on paper. I just truly hope that politics and traditional mindset does not cause the originality and creativity which oozed off the screen while a Pixar film was shown to be lost. Because of the past. Because of what "Disney" stands for. I know, I know - this didn’t happen before, so why should it happen now…well, because Disney had nothing to do with the writing/producing/editing parts of Toy Story, The Incredibles and Monsters Inc. Now they do.
All I have to say is if Pocahontas II: Back to Civilization is released using computer animation, I will consider that a sure sign that all is lost.
