Wrap. Pack. Tape. Repeat.

As planned for a little while now, but not “announced” until yesterday, Adam and I are moving back to Toronto in a few short weeks. A small handful of people knew and most people were surprised - I hate being secretive, but sometimes it’s better to be cautious until you know exactly what’s going to happen.

moving boxes

Now we’re here. Twenty boxes are neatly packed and stacked…ready for transport. And we haven’t even met with the moving company yet. You might be wondering why - seriously? three weeks…packing? seriously?

Yep. Heard that one. Multiple times, from many different people in a variety of time zones.

But here’s the thing - while I usually don’t start packing for a short trip or vacation until the last possible second, moving is a whole different thing for me. It requires planning. Strategy. And (fortunately for Adam) complete control over the process.

labels

Each room gets a color. Each box gets a number. Contents are listed beside each number (and box size) on a sheet of paper.

Are you scared yet?

I take a tremendous amount of pride in knowing how to pack a box. The skill of semi-inconspicuously stuffing every last personal belonging owned by six year old me under my bed comes in handy during an international relocation.

So away we pack…the bitter cold of Toronto awaits us as we slowly start to say goodbye to the sunny south.

Some are taking extra precautions that they aren’t left behind.

(What is with this cat, laundry and being so cute I can’t help but take a photo?)

You’re moving to Toronto, permanently? What made you decide to do that? That’s a really awesome - albeit huge and daunting - change. Hope Adam retains some sanity. :p

Okay I know I am in Park City when I say this but I am PRE-PLANNING (something you appear to love) in saying LET’S HAVE ONE MORE DINNER at least before we both bid adieu to the fair city of Las Angeles. I have 8 days before my deportation when I get back on the 27th so let’s plan the shiz out of this! Even if it is just me coming and playing with all of the kids I am demanding a final meeting!

PS. Please document Alex dying with happiness upon your return.

    Bobby - who needs sanity? he’s gone an in-house moving company (i.e. ME)…I’m sure he’ll survive. ;)
Heather - YUP…that turqouise one is actually my favorite…we had a few other white ones but they’ve ripped and busted over the last couple of years.

Kelly - YAY…we need to talk more about the thing in the place with the stuff we were talking about the other night…!

Sarah - OMG YES. You’re back on the 27th? I’ll come bother you on the 28th, 29th, 30th, 31st…let me know what times work for you. I want to hear all about Slamdance!

Color coded and numbered boxes?!!? Wow, impressive. I’ve moved several times to different states and just this last move did I finally realize I should at least label the boxes books, DVDs, etc. Can we hire you two for our next move?

LOL - you can hire the two of us but Adam’s pretty much good for jokes and ordering pizza while coordinating a move. Oh and staying out of my clearly way-too-excited-about-organization self while everything gets boxed up and stacked in corners.

Note, however, that I did give in and let the movers finish up the kitchen. That really is the most annoying room in the house to pack.
