Damn you Starbucks

6 December 2007 2 Comments

Every single freakin’ time.

They keep pumping the most sappy, cartoon-y advertisements…and by the time I’ve finished watching it my eyes are all prickily and I’m on the verge of full blown quiver chin. It’s in part the wonderful use of Badly Drawn Boy’s I Love N.Y.E, but there’s something else and I can’t put my finger on it and by god why is a 30 second commercial making me emotional?

Lord…

Oh little penguins. By golly big galoof-y bear. Fuzzy wuzzy reindeer…you melt my heart. Over, and over, and over again.

So I decided to investigate this…what does Adweek have to say? They agree - the ads are awesome. I was surprised to also learn that this is their first national ad campaign. Not that they need it…but man, if you’re as ubiquitous as Starbucks and decide to launch an ad campaign…you better be this good.

Alright fine - I went all analytical to justify writing about my blubbering. Sue me.

    Hey Josefina!

You’re 100% right - they’re not that great. Which is why I’m dumbfounded that the waterworks start like clockwork on around…oh…the 10th note of the song. I’m pretty convinced it is the song, which is a favorite off a soundtrack that I listened to incessantly a few years back.

I also have a profound weakness for the cuteness of penguins.

    Thanks!
