Music Snobbery: I’m not much better

5 June 2007 5 Comments

Eek. Almost 35%. Barely over the hump and onto the long tail…I’d be lying if I didn’t mention that I’m a tad disappointed in myself.

mainstream o meter

I have a solution in mind…better get back to writing requirements for it.

Via Matt. You did better than me - for now… ;-)

P.S. - I did *much* better when I looked at my mainstream quotient for this week. Whew!

Coldplay and Franz Ferdinand both hurt your score. Overall, your music tastes is quite nice. It reminded me to give love to Camera Obscura again. It’s been a while.

Thanks, Matt - your post actually was more timely than you can imagine, because I was just taking a breather from describing that very desire to be on top of new music and aware of artists that only 2% of the population are listening to. But I’ll be writing more on that on another day when I…erm…can. :-)

I’ve considered this as well. I always told myself that I wouldn’t be like my parents, stuck to their roots and not wanting to like new music, or at least give it a try. At 28, I’m fairly proud of myself that I am still loving new music, while at the same time, enjoying what I grew up with (SP, NIN, Pearl Jam, etc.)

I’m interested in what you have to say about the matter.

Matt - I totally agree. There is a certain pride in keeping up with new music and not hanging on to the collection of alt rock/mainstream pop of my youth. Thank goodness a dash of Christina Agulaira, Destiny’s Child and (gulp) N’Sync was just a phase. ;-)
But then at the same time, I can still get the ‘I’m so out of the loops’ sweats when I talk to someone like my 13 year old cousin about music…since all she knows is the stuff that ends up on Billboard charts and shows up on Youth targeted channels, she knows it well. That only lasts briefly though…until I remember that there’s a reason why 65% of me has moved completely past that.

    Jenn - well…yeah…um…I guess - WHATEVER. You’re goin’ down sista…
