Pavlov would be proud (or…The Seagull Whisperer)
Hanging out over on Granville Island before the conference starts, Jenn and I made a new friend.
His name is…Winston. Or so I have dubbed him. I don’t normally dub names upon wildlife (okay yes I do…), but when one is as ridiculously cute as he (yes, a seagull can be cute), they deserve a name…nay, an identity.
He was hanging out over on the dock before I said “Hey little guy, c’mere!”…never expecting him to actually take me up on it. He did, however. He hopped on over, eyes intent on me and my camera. He struck poses, and held still long enough for my weenie point and shoot to love him.
While I would like to think that my last name and love for animals incited his attraction, I suspect it has more to do with the touristy nature of the area. Take one bumbling non-local, add to that a camera and the conveniently located market next door…odds are, Winston usually receives at least a crumb for his efforts.
Unfortunately, I had a vanilla latte. Not a crumb in sight. It didn’t take long for Winston to realize this, turn his beak with disdain and fly off to find the next camera wielding (hopefully more generous) person on the street.
You forgot to mention that he was FREAKIN HUGE
What you mean to say is that he was SUCCESSFUL…clearly he had conned his fair share of crumbs out of folks before…
Need I remind you that I was thieved by one of Winston’s cousins / brothers / relatives in Laguna Beach?
In fact, judging from his size, it may have been him who stole my delicious ice cream on that warm day that I was getting so much enjoyment from.
Actually, now that I think about it, he was probably the accomplice. Hamming it up for the camera while is brethren snuck up in a winged attack from behind me.
Damn seagulls.
Congratulations, he has your eyes. And Adam’s nose. Snap!

And don’t worry, Adam - Winston and I had a long talk…it went something like this:
“Winston, why would a seagull steal someone’s ice cream?”
“BWAK!”
“Yeah, I see your point…but come on - it was *his* ice cream…”
“BWAK! BWAAAK!”
“You’re right, Winston - if he didn’t see it coming, he didn’t deserve the ice cream. Well put, little one…well put.”
