Home again.

Well, we made it. And with one day left (as we flew in on Sunday) in this long month of April. My hope is that May brings more than just flowers…possibly the will to resist a new pair of pants/Threadless t-shirts/dresses/purses…I could go on for days.

That might be a good way to resist pulling out the ol’ cheque card.

(Yes…I know. I may be stateside again, but it will always be “cheque” to me.)

I have found another indulgence, actually. One that costs significantly less than the dress in the window of the store I walked past while headed to/from the bank. His name is Tom Beland and he writes…wait for it…

Comics.

Yes, me – I am reading a comic book. I have the first five issues of volume 2 and it only cost me the privilege to tease and mock Adam for his own comic and TPB addiction (Oh my GOD I used a comic related acronym…).

True Story Swear To God is about Tom and Lily, who met on a Disneyworld park bench. He moves to Puerto Rico to live with her, and hijinks and cuteness ensue. It’s adorable. His drawing are amazing, and more than once I’ve glanced up over an issue (holding the pages ever so lightly so as not to crinkle/bend/crease anything), gazed at Adam and thought:

“Yep. Been there.”

[Okay, maybe in the example to my left, Adam would be the one to get a sense of deja vu…)

Anyway, I’ve already gone through all five of those issues, and ordered two issues from volume 1 (but I’m finding several of them very difficult to locate…) and I’m hooked. Crazy hooked. This is why I don’t do this…

I haven’t set alerts for when more issues become available on eBay yet, but I’m definitely getting there.

Good lord, what have I started…

  1. There’s no shame whatsoever in reading comics, Rachel. A feeling echoed by the recent Marvel “Super Hero Science Exhibition” at the Ontario Science Center. Over the years, comics have been educators for millions, introducing words and concepts to youngs minds, refreshing their interest in reading.

I say go ahead and enjoy your comics, dear. Comics and graphic novels are fantastic mediums by which a lot of fantastic stories get told. Add to the fact that it’s really cool you can relate to the material on a baser level, and I think you’ve got the start of something wonderful.

And then move on to Marvel. DC Comics aren’t as based in reality, or science, and outside of Batman, the heroes are all frankly p-ssies.

  2. Aw, thanks Bobby! You, everyone at the office (minus one tiny holdout) and even the author of True Story Swear To God, have been openly supportive of my new hobby! I dunno about Marvel though…it’s going to take some time and possibly ease Jenny down the path of no return with SOMETHING she likes (you should have seen her face in the comic book store…for the five seconds she could stand to be in there. PRICELESS)…before I can go down the superhero route. But we’ll see. Everyone was shocked and amazed I’d gone this far!
