I had a good giggle this morning when I read this article on Boing Boing on how Hollywood depicts computer stuff. One of my favorites:

4. Code is not three dimensional
Remember in “hackers” when the gibson is depicted as a three dimensional city that the hackers must navigate through? Bullshit! We may use a dash of color in our shell to make things a bit clearer, but last I checked my terminal app doesn’t require OpenGL. I’m working here, bitches - I’m not playing quake.

With a husband who has sat next to me for a countless number of movies and TV shows where he shakes his head and sighs, muttering, “are you kidding me?”, I know exactly what this writer is getting at. Admittedly, while the above example did seem a teensy bit extreme the first time I saw it, I just shrugged and moved on with my life. But over the years I’ve learned a little more (not much, but enough) and find myself a bit more sensitive to the glorification of computers in movies like The Net and Swordfish (p.s. I am shocked that the word “swordfish” pulls up that gawd awful movie as the first result in Google…eeeks.)
