You can do it!
September 8th, 2006 RachelOne of the greatest things about working for a small company is the ability to really stretch your wings and learn how to do things that you normally would never even think of attempting and in most other jobs no one would expect you to.
Here’s the message I received from my boss today (not verbatim, but the general gist):
"Can you tackle editing these HTML files, which have our old company name and product name throughout?"
Feels a cold sweat coming on…
"sure, where are they?" what have I gotten myself into???
I may be blessed with highly technically savvy genes and get to learn through osmosis on a daily basis tiny snippets of the incredible knowledge our development team knows…but this tiny task was something that I had no idea how to even approach.
Help…
But that’s the other part of the small company environment. Without hesitation, I asked the first person in the room who I thought might help "What do I do…?" Soon I had two people there guiding me along, showing me where I needed to go and what I needed to do. Five minutes of help meant that in ten minutes I was whizzing along making changes and refreshing the browser window so I could make sure it still looked okay. COOOOOOOL.
Right, if you’re a techie, you’ll read that, roll your eyes and go "Big whoop, lady…who doesn’t know how to do that?" Well, I didn’t, and I’m willing to bet if you handed the compressed folder I started out with to a random sampling of Internet browsers and said "change the HTML to say doodad instead of wingding", they wouldn’t know what to do either. But I do now, because the environment I work in allows me to stretch my wings, and my boss and co-workers help me to stay up in the air.
Corny…? Maybe. But damn, that’s a nice way to end a week.
