Parking Lots
March 1st, 2006 RachelIt always amazes me how many people will slink around those first two rows to try and get "a good one". There might be hundreds of spaces available in the back and yet without fail in a busy parking lot (e.g. the mall, at York, etc…) someone’s waiting for that special lottery like moment when their legs will be saved from another chance to be exercised.
That’s kind of what this reminds me of.
We all want to be those Flickr guys, we all want to turn our coffee shop idea into something that AOL/Google/Microsoft/Yahoo is drooling all over as they throw buckets of cash at us. Now. It could happen, of course…like most anything, there’s always a chance. Just like there’s always a chance that I’ll get that parking spot right by the front door. But, there’s also the possibility that I’ll be circling around for that parking spot (or rather, niche market), waiting and waiting for the opportunity closest to the prize…
When all the while, if I had opened my eyes a bit more, and been willing to invest a bit more time, energy and possibly a bit of sacrifice (in Canada, walking around when the wind chill hits a certain level…well, that takes commitment)…I could have made it there my way.
American Idol vs. playing a club in a small town. Which would you choose - the shot at "instant fame", or the longer, possibly windier road that it takes to make it on your own?
