Say WHAT?
February 16th, 2006 RachelIn what could be the most backward move that the RIAA could pursue, it looks like their trying to make it a crime to load up your iPod with ripped songs from a purchased CD. So, that puts CD ripping companies out of service and turns the fifteen year old obsessed with Hilary Duff into a criminal for wanting to listen to "Beat of My Heart" on her shiny new x-mas iPod.
Oh, and if she wants to make an extra copy because her parents have two cars and she sometimes forgets it in the minivan, well that’s also wrong according to the RIAA…now. This represents a massive change of heart on their part when compared to official statements made by Don Verrilli:
"The record companies, my clients, have said, for some time now, and
it’s been on their website for some time now, that it’s perfectly
lawful to take a CD that you’ve purchased, upload it onto your
computer, put it onto your iPod."
And BoingBoing has updated their article to point out this interesting contradition on the RIAA website…
