Editorial Inaccuracy

February 11th, 2006 Rachel

This is what’s wrong with athletics in Canada.

I was perusing the Toronto Star today when I happened across Rosie DiManno’s editorial "cleverly" entitled, Yankee doodle Canuck. For the better part of an entire page, DiManno berates and belittles recently Americanized figure skater Tanith Belbin. Here’s one passage (of several) that made me gasp and wince:

"I’m very grateful to the president but I don’t think George Bush knows
who I am," she demurred. "It’s not like it was a private bill that was
made for me."

Except it was, rather, championed by Michigan Sen.
Carl Levin, who authored the amendments that included new rules for
shortening residency requirements in special cases. And Belbin is so
very special.

No longer an "alien," but other descriptors do come to mind: Mercenary, turncoat, traitorous little minx.

Ouch. Now, I understand being proud of your country. I understand being upset that someone has chosen to not be a part of your country. BUT…Dimanno very obviously has done no historical background on Canada’s history at the Olympic level…

‘Cause guess what? Canada’s done the exact same thing.

Having ridden dressage in Canada for a few years, I was able to meet and get to know one of it’s best elite riders, Evi Strasser. An electric rider, as well as person, Evi came to Canada from Germany in 1988. She became a citizen six years later. Right before the Olympics. Citizenship was expadited in a very similar fashion (though I don’t know if a bill was introduced) and the Strasser/Lavinia duo were able to compete at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta with the Canadian flag proudly displayed on her saddle pad.

I think that is GREAT. I think making it possible for any athlete to follow their ambitions, make their mark and compete is a fabulous thing. I think calling a person who does so "traitorous" and a "turncoat" is absolutely missing the point.

Canada’s system for supporting their athletes is lacking. Severely. Not to mention the fact that her partner was American! Why should they hold up the Canadian flag? Would DiManno have the same insults for her partner Ben Agosto, who is American, if the situation was reversed? Would she be spitting at him for giving up his American citizenship? No. She’d be welcoming him, just as the U.S.A. has welcomed Belbin.

I was disappointed when I read this article because I’ve read her stuff before and for the most part been pleased, if not impressed. But this is just ridiculous whining. If Dimanno wants to complain about something, she should complain about the Canadian Olympic body that did not look as appealing as the one in the US. There are reasons that extend beyond a passport or what fuzzy hat is worn at the opening ceremonies. She should complain about the support system that is non-existent. She should complain about the lack of money available.

And she should get her facts straight.

Congratulations, Tanith Belbin. Get out there and win a medal for the U.S.A. In the end, you’ve won it for you.

Slava and Adam, I know you’d be disappointed if these didn’t get posted, and Court this will help you pretend you could make it too…yes, I’m wearing my goofy hat again. No judging. Please.

These guys are awesome. Court and I are *extremely* lucky and grateful. Hopefully that will keep ‘em from running away from us and this project for a little while!

Yes, everyone, I know. I’m a fanatic. You’ll appreciate this later.

Maybe much later.

I wish I could get online right now…

We’re sitting here in Williams on Saturday – the wi-fi I
want to leach off of is tantalizingly near…but alas, I’ve yet to successfully
get on there. Right now though, I’m just trying to occupy myself so as not to
get in the way of the collaborative efforts going on right next to me.

This is the first time I’ve created a post offline, not in
real time…it’s odd. I miss the box, the hyperlink button etc, etc. But, that’s
the way it goes, and like I said, I need to focus on something there. On
the other hand, this is also the first time I’ve been able to write things up
as they come to my head, while experiencing what I’m writing about…what’s more
real time? It’s tough to say…possibly this way oddly enough.

The list that Court and I put together during our thai food
outing is being expanded. A lot. There’s so many things that we, the
non-techies, could have begun to think about. It’s a little scary…the idea
seems so simple, and the different examples already out there make it look easy
(well, when it’s done decently…). There’s a million different options and ways
to do this – it’s a little nerve racking; maybe something that I brush off as “not
necessary now could actually be the key to getting this off the ground.

Oh, and it looks like she’s being built from the ground up
again (my woman studies mom would not be impressed by my use just there
of the word “she). I think this is a good thing? Right now it’s a timeline
issue…will this be running, ready to go for the summer? We have reasons (beyond
being impatient) to hope so. Well, I think putting it in their very capable
hands and saying “do what you gotta do is our best bet.

I wish I could get online right now.

Yummy

Seth Godin mentioned this interestingly packaged (and apparently very tasty!) chocolate…

Let the hunt begin to find it online, however - there’s no link. :^( Alas, I’ll have to settle with something more local, I suppose.

Maybe Wendell and I can convince Jordan and William to pick up some while their in London for MEM...

PyramideYummmmmmmmmm.

UPDATE: HAHA! Found em - available through Dean and Deluca…can be seen (and ordered) here.
